Find Part one Here and Part Two Here
Akin started thinking over
the offer. He said to himself; ‘I need to sit down and plan my life.’ He
decided to go home and do the maths. He joined a commercial bus back to Jakande
estate where his rented 2-bedroom flat is. After 90 minutes of go-slow he reached the estate and
decided to trek to his block instead of taking commercial bike. He followed a
short-cut that he knew very well and was going thinking on what he will do with
his life. He wanted to examine the offer and see if it will worth it or perhaps
he will just have to find a way to start his own business. After all, starting
his own business has always been his priority. As he turned around a corner, he
saw two secondary school students sitting down under a mango tree. One of the
boys was smoking cigarette. This was not new to Akin and it reminded him of his
days in the university. He said to himself, ‘this boy needs help.’ He however
walked pass them. Suddenly, something echoed it in his mind that he should go
talk to the boy and give them good advice. Akin could not resist so he turned
back and went to those boys.‘Hey guys...’ he said. ‘hello sire’ replied the other boy who was sitting with the one smoking. The smoking boy turned to Akin and said, ‘go away’. Akin was surprised. ‘Well,’ he coughed, ‘this is not my business but I must confess, you are risking early death.’ Akin said. ‘Wetin consign you?’ the boy looked angrily at him and left the place. Akin sat on the spot where the smoking boy rose from and started talking to the other boy. The other boy told him that they couldn’t enter the school because they didn’t want to participate in the general labour. Akin was trying to advise the boy and he told him to stop walking the juvenile smoker that just left now. The boy told him that he had been trying his best to stop him from smoking but his friend would never listen. Akin learned that they are in Senior Secondary School 2 – the seniors.
Suddenly, Akin felt a hard, heavy knock landed at his back. He screamed and turned around to see what the hell was it – only to see the smoker boy with a heavy firewood in his hand. He hit Akin at the back. The other boy was surprised and shocked at the same time. The smoker boy moved backward and started staggering – ready for fight. Akin, feeling very sharp pain, put his hand to reach the spot where he was hit, touched it and saw blood. He asked the boy in pidgin; ‘Wetin I do you na? You wan kill me?’ ‘I don warn you before, you no gree.’ The boy replied angrily and was making another move to attack Akin. Akin briefly looked at the other boy and saw his disapproving facial expression. As the trouble-maker rushed towards him, Akin skilfully dodged the blow and stepped backward in few steps to enable him balance and prepare. He said to himself ‘this boy is a dare-devil.’ Within a minute, the whole place is filled with 7 other students – only God knows where they were in the first place. Akin was surprised and wondered what they could be doing in that place since their school is not even close. The students started shouting ‘Tanjigo! Tanjigo! Tanjigo!’ Akin then realized that it’s that smoker-boy that they are hailing. The boy rushed towards Akin with his wood to hit him again. Akin used his hand to absorb the hit skilfully and held on to the wood. He gave the boy a very dirty slap. Everything halted for a while. Tanjigo touched his cheek and then angrily signalling to the other boys and suddenly all of them came rushing to attack Akin. Akin realised that heaven was about to loose. The other boy was shouting for help and calling off his friends but they wouldn’t listen – if at all they heard him.
